Co to je?
Expresionismus jako umělecký směr a proud se šířil v severských evropských zemích, zvláště v Německu v letech 1905-1945. K nám se dostal též, ovšem nebyl přijat širokou veřejností. V té době u nás dosáhl vrcholu kubismus, kterému byla věnována větší pozornost a připisována větší umělecká hodnota.
Exprese - dojem, výraz nitra. Expresivní doslova i obrazně představuje vyjádření vnitřního světa umělce. Suběktivní vyjádření skutečnosti. Deformovaný obraz, nereálné barvy, myšlenky, představy.
Odmítá impresionismus, realismus starých umělců.
V malbě je tipická tmavá linie, obrys. Častokrát se nesnaží o prostorové zobrazení.
